History

In the late 1980s and early 1990s some of the first Tibetans were able to settle in various areas throughout the United States under President Reagan's Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986. Today, Colorado is home to over 400 Tibetans.

The striking similarities between Tibet and Colorado's beautiful mountains, high altitude, and vast clear skies drew many Tibetans to the Rocky Mountain Region. The first Tibetans to come to Colorado after the Chinese occupation in the 1950s have now lived in Colorado for over 30 years. Over the last 15 years, there has been a continual growth in Colorado's Tibetan community.

Colorado residents have shown a great interest in Tibetan religion and culture, and have always expressed their warm and welcoming spirit. Many have been eager to learn about the secular aspects of our culture, and we are always equally eager to continue developing ties with the broader community.
